New pics

I've uploaded a bunch of new photos, check them out by clicking on photos in the blue bar. They're mostly from the 'Race around Perth' and learning to surf up at Lancelin. Here are a few I've cropped to show up better on this blog. Which is your favourite?

Wedding

Saira looking 30

Saira, looking 30 (according to her).

I'll definitely be in Pakistan next year for Saira's wedding!! I'm really looking forward to seeing the country again, I met some fantastic people there. If it's a December wedding I'll be able to stick around before and after for a while as I'll have graduated from uni (so my fingers are crossed). Regardless, I'm going to be there :)

Update

Last week: going up to Yanchep, having fun with US students, preparing them socially for a semester studying abroad, learning to surf, drinking, playing lots of pool, heading back to Perth, watching my first AFL game with Pascaline and the US kids again. Watched a few movies.

This week: Pascaline's last week in Perth.. visa runs out on Sunday. Coloured my hair 'burgundy', received first pay, going shopping tonight, getting new cell phone, new jeans, new glasses. Haven't done much this week apart from spend quality time with Pascaline before she heads home.

New job :: Student Advisor

LinkedIn has a couple of nice features that I have just used. Every week or two members receive an email about any updates that people in their network have made to their profiles.  When you update your profile you can also choose to let your network know as well. You'd only email out when you update your profile. As profile changes usually reflect job changes, and people don't change jobs all that often and when they do it is usually pretty important, I don't see this as spam.

Here's the message I sent out:

I recently updated my profile: View my profile.

Hi everyone,

Having stepped down from the presidency of the AIESEC committee at Curtin University of Technology I have taken on the position of student advisor to the US students involved in the 'Service Abroad' program run by the university in association with it's US counterparts. This job has so far proved to be a lot of fun and should compliment (and enhance) my studies, which I am aiming to complete before the end of 2007.

Facebook

I joined up to facebook a while ago more out of interest than anything else. I initially tried to join before Curtin University was even on the system - now I think there are about 300ish Curtin students on it. Facebook is extremely popular in the US where something like 85% of all tertiary students have a profile and log on at least weekly. So, in my new job advising the US exchange students my (almost blank and friendless) facebook profile was found and I've received a bunch of invites. You can find me here.

It really said something about facebook's popularity when, having brought the US students to building 599 for the first time to send emails home to worried parents, most of them also took the opportunity to check their facebook accounts.

It's been a great week

I haven't posted lately but I've not really had the opportunity to. This last week has been great, I've been doing some work making sure the new US students settle into Perth well...  and actually that took up most of my time! I did get the chance to watch a great movie, 'a world without thieves',  got my car serviced ($900 for a 100,000km service, dang!), and spent some precious time with Pascaline. The activities have been varied and I'm doing new and interesting things, meeting and getting to know some good people, and generally having fun. All in all it's good. I'm just setting an away message on my email as I'll be away till Friday afternoon. I shall hope to post an update on the 2 weeks at that point. Pics to come :)

I am really enjoying my new job

but it's early days.... anyway I'll write something up Thursday evening about it. Today I'm doing two lots of airport pickups, staying at a hotel overnight, driving a minibus, ensuring the new American exchange students don't get into trouble on their first night in Perth. Pretty similar to an AIESEC reception for 30 incoming I suppose. I'll be on camp Monday to Friday next week.

Unsubscribing from aiesec.net communities

Well this is one of the tasks of 'Heading to the Future'... it's just taken a hour of clicking to unsubscribe from almost all the communities I was subscribed to on aiesec.net (I was on an unusually large number mind). I'm not really gonna miss deleting the deluge of spams from .net every day.
